Haruko raises her child by herself. She has an unusual living arrangement. She lives with her son Riku, her best friend Aiko, and Aiko's boyfriend Sorao. Yuko moves in with Haruko one day so she can spend the summer at an art school. Yuko is the daughter of an old friend of Haruko's named Tomoyo. Before Tomoyo called Haruko to ask if her daughter could stay with her over the summer, they hadn't talked in years. Haruko and Tomoyo have a painful history together.
